The hike will last 1 1/2-2 hours. (It will be easy for you to leave early if needed.)Springtime in the morning is one of the most fabulous times for birding\, sights and the sounds of the forest coming to life. SUMMARY:Colonial Feast 2024
DESCRIPTION:The annual Colonial Feast will be held on April 13th starting at 6:00 pm. This event is open to the public and attendees are asked to bring a colonial period dish.  \n\n\n\nThe feast is held on the weekend closest to April 18th to commemorate the Battle of the Great Cacapehon (Cacapon) which took place on April 18\, 1756. \n\n\n\nReports sent to Col. Washington state that soldiers from the fort went out in the morning searching for horses and found Indians.  When the alarm was raised\, Capt. John Fenton Mercer\, Ensign Thomas Carter and their company went out in pursuit of the Indians. The company was ambushed by a large number of the enemy estimated to be upwards of 100 including Frenchmen.  Capt. Mercer\, Ensign Carter and fifteen soldiers were killed. This engagement was the largest and most costly battle between soldiers of Col. Washington’s Virginia Regiment and French & Indians to occur in the colony of Virginia during the French and Indian War.
